Horse racing is an equestrian sport that has been practiced over the
centuries; the chariot races of Roman times are an early example, as
is the contest of the steeds of the god Odin and the giant Hrungnir in
Norse mythology. It is often inextricably associated with gambling.
The common nickname for Thoroughbred horse racing is The Sport of
Kings.
Types of racing
The style of racing, the distances and the type of events varies very
much by the country in which the race is occurring, and many countries
offer different types of horse races.
In the
United States, Thoroughbred flat races are run on surfaces of either
dirt, polytrack or turf; other tracks offer Quarter Horse racing and
Standardbred horse racing, or combinations of these three types of
racing surfaces. Racing with other breeds, such as Arabian horse
racing, is found on a limited basis. American Thoroughbred races are
run at a wide variety of distances, most commonly from 5 to 12
furlongs (0.63 to 1.5 mi/1.0 to 2.4 km); with this in mind, breeders
of Thoroughbred race horses attempt to breed horses that excel at a
particular distance.

Horse Racing betting
The main object of betting on horses is to beat the 'Oddsmakers' or
the 'Odds Compilers' and win some money. Additionally, placing a bet
on your favorite event makes the race exciting and more enjoyable.
Betting is done through Sports books or Sportsbooks (US) and
Bookmakers (UK) entities that accept bets. You can bet on the outcome
of horse races and several sporting events.
To place a bet, you go to a sportsbook, physical or online. You could
also bet over the phone with many sportsbooks. Note that a sportsbook
is not the same as an oddsmaker. The sports book simply accepts sports
bets. An oddsmaker is a person who sets the betting odds.
You need to state what you are betting on by making a selection, the
type of bet and the amount you are wagering. Your selection will
obviously depend on the odds offered, so you will want to examine the
range of odds available before you make a decision.
Punters who adopt the same attitude become winners. Ask any bookmaker
what kind of punter makes the most money and he will probably tell you
that it is one who aims for:
-
A
winning results as often as possible
-
A
small profit on total outlay
-
Consistent, reliable performance
If you
sincerely want to be successful in horse racing then you must adopt
the above attitudes to betting. Instead of dreaming of overnight
fortunes, be content to siphon off a small profit on a regular basis.
As your betting fund grows and the size of your bets increases, so
your small profits will also increase and before long you may be
generating one hundred, five hundred, or even a thousand pounds per
day!
